The Volt Rifle is one of the most highly-modable weapons in Hellgate: London, with possible slots for all five types of mods. This helps a lot, especially with a new character, since you're sure to find something you can slot in your spark rifle. Quite often, you seem to find every kind of mod but the one or two your chosen weapon needs.
The Volt Rifle is featured early on in the E3 2005 cinematic. The male templar uses it to decimate the initial rush of Stalkers, then disembowels a Shock Minion with a single point blank shot.

The Volt Rifle fires very quickly, has medium range, and shoots in a spray pattern. To envision the pattern say your new Marksman is holding the bullseye on a human-sized target 7m out. If you let go a load aimed right at the navel, the target would be peppered from oh, neck to knees, and out each side to the forearms, if the target were holding his arms out Vitruvian Man style.
The volt rifle is not a precision weapon; its projectiles cover a circle with a radius of at least a meter at medium range. It's hard to miss the target entirely with this weapon, but almost impossible to hit with every shot either.
