In reference to the powerful electrical bolts discharged when it is fired, this weapon is appropriately named after the Roman god of storms. The Tempest heavy assault rifle is another of the weapons used during the final months of the nation's military war against the demons.

The Tempest uses a combination of a powerful magnetic field generator and high-voltage electricity to discharge a burst of electrical "balls". Designed to damage as many enemy combatants as possible, the firing pattern is a spread of independently moving projectiles that move in a random, forward path.

It's not the most scientific way to approach weapon selection, but the Tempest gun certainly looks like fun to play with. It fires a cluster of electric orbs that squiggle forward in semi-random fashion. The orbs are slightly separated when they emerge from the barrel, and after spreading out slightly to the sides, they converge at about 15 yards, before flying off in all directions past that point. Learn your Tempest Rifle sweet spot and you will prosper.
The 'Tempest' Gun shoots balls of electricity that split off and squiggle randomly forward. There's a 'sweet spot' at medium range where as many balls as possible hit the same target.

The Tempest Rifle had very different graphics in some early screenshots, though the spreading array of lightning balls is unmistakable.

Newer gameplay movies have shown the cluster of electric orbs staying quite tight until the sweet spot, then spreading out after that. It's unknown how the gun will work in the final game, but the newer way seems dumb. Anyone can use a rifle that does more damage up close. It takes skill to use one that can't be too close or too far, though.
