While it's silly in retrospect, we spent a great deal of time in early 2006 trying to figure out what this weapon was. It looks like a sword, but the shine of light on the blade looks almost like wood, and the way the Templar is holding it is more reminiscent of cocking a shotgun that fighting with a blade. The texturing on the shatterscythe has improved over time, and in recent shots it's clearly a sword, albeit one with an odd shape. It's popular with demons, too.
