Hunters await.
Hunter skills were originally grouped into three skill trees. With the introduction of the Engineer and Marksman classes, the original skills were divided between them, with some other skills being removed entirely. This page is now a shell, with all the up to date skill info on the Engineer and Hunter pages. This page preserves unused skill descriptions and information about the evolution of the Hunter class' abilities.

Older Hunter Skills

The following are old skill descriptions from before the Marksman/Engineer split. Do not expect to see any of these skills in the final game in anything resembling the form described below.

Reconissance Skills

Recon skills seem to be focused on movement, as well as planting and throwing bombs, and hitting targets more effectively. Final skill function and arrangement remains TBD. Most recon skills have been removed from the game, and will presumably return with the introduction of the third Hunter class, sometime post-release.

Crouch mapped to the right click.
Crouch mapped to the right click.
Crouch

Crouch does what it sounds like; enables a Hunter to crouch down into a sniper pose. It's actively selected, like any other gun skill. It's been seen mapped to the right mouse button, but it's unclear if that means a player would right click to crouch and then use their left click to fire their weapon while modified by another skill, or if crouch is an actual firing skill, one that fires just as you would while standing or walking, but with greater accuracy, while adding some kind of defensive bonus to make fewer incoming shots hit the hunter.

"Hunters get the ability to crouch down which steadies aim for the ranged weapons and decreases his or her profile allowing for better defense." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Sharpshooter

"A better version of crouch, this allows Hunters to drop into a more stable firing position and increase the chance for a critical hit and do more damage at the same time." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Decoy

Places a decoy to draw enemy fire/attention. Similar to the Amazon skill from Diablo II?

Exploit Vulnerability

"This allows the Hunter to become an expert in finding and exploiting the weaknesses of enemies." --IGN Preview, December 2006

This skill will increase damage or critical hit bonus, but not give you an actual "aim for the left shoulder" type of tip. Damage in Hellgate: London is handled with a hit/miss calculation; there are no headshots or other areas where higher accuracy increases damage. That's what skills are for.

Mine

Places a motion detecting mine.

One of the several Hunter skills that sound like traps or time-delayed attacks.

Escape

"When things get a little scary or stealth is more important than strength, this ability allows Hunters to cloak and become virtually invisible. Considering the non-existent melee skills, it's especially important when getting mobbed by large groups of melee enemies. Initiating an attack will turn the cloak off." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Beacon

Finding and exploiting holes in enemy defense makes a good hunter. Beacon will paint an enemy with infared light which will highlight their weaknesses." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Beacon sounds quite similar to Exploit Vulnerability. It's possibly they are the same skill. It's also possible that some skills in different skill trees will roughly duplicate each other, to provide the same type of useful ability to different subclasses of the Hunter faction.

Napalm Strike

"This skill was a little hard to aim and use effectively at the moment but the potential for an exciting attack is certainly there. This ability shoots out a target marker that will call in a napalm strike from afar. The attack damages enemies and potentially lights them on fire causing damage over time. It's an awesome attack to use from afar on a clumped group of enemies." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Sounds akin to the Sorceress' Meteor skill from Diablo II.

Engineering Skills

Engineering skills enable the Hunter to build and modify mechanical objects to better serve his purposes. Final skill function and arrangement remains TBD.

Makeshift Mod

"Anyone that's been following Hellgate: London will know about the mods that can attach to weapons to grant new damage stats. This ability allows Hunters to construct a mod out of salvaged parts. The main difference between this and other mods is that it will be destroyed when removed." --IGN Preview, December 2006

It's often difficult, at least early on, to find the right type of mod, or one that's of use in your weapon. This could be a low level skill to make things more convenient for a Hunter. On the other hand, if this skill can make the best types of mods (perhaps with more skill points?) it could be almost a form of crafting that enables high level Hunters to make something no other faction can.

Create Gun

Constructs a gun out of components.

Like the Makeshift Mod skill, it's not known if this will be a diversion at lower levels, or something with potential for long term value.

Drones

Early versions of the Drone skills.

Light Assault Drone in action.
Light Assault Drone in action.
Light Assault Drone

"This ability allows Hunters to construct mobile turrets that run around the battlefield shooting everything in sight. At the moment they're the size of large dogs and can be equipped with any one-handed gun as a weapon. When creating a drone the weapon chosen is used up. This should allow players to use weapons normally reserved for other classes." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Assault drones are constructed from pistols and other light, one-handed weapons.

Combat Drone

"Another Hunter construct, this drone can be given any melee weapon to use against enemies." --IGN Preview, December 2006

This essentially turns a sword into a melee combat drone. Very useful early on for Hunters, who can not use swords (Templar-only weapon) anyway. It's not known where other, chainsaw-like melee weapons fit in this drone classification.

Heavy Assault Drone

"This last constructible drone acts as another mobile turret. The main difference is that this turret can use any two-handed rifle or heavy weapon as its main offensive weapon." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Bigger guns = bigger damage.

Supply Drone

"This little friend helps with a handy buff. The Supply Drone is a small robot that uses nanotechnology and adrenal boosters to help shorten cool down times of weapons and skills of nearby allies." --IGN Preview, December 2006

It sounds almost like an aura, of sorts.

Medical Drone

"Along with the Light Assault Drone, Hunters can construct a medical drone that will hustle around the battlefield healing the Hunter and any nearby allies." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Rocket Bot

"When the Drone's firepower just won't get it done, call in a Rocket Bot. As its name suggests, this bot shoots rockets at enemies. It also comes standard with a fuse that causes the bot to self-destruct after it has expended its ammunition." --PC Gamer Class Preview, April 2007

From the description of the skill, it sounds like this Bot will be in addition to the drone all Engineers can command. What this means for other 'support' drones, like the Supply Drone and the Medical Drone, remains to be seen. Will you be allow one of each, multiple copies of the same drone, only one support type at a time, or will the number increase with more points in the skill?

Marksmanship Skills

Old versions of various mostly Marksman skills listed here.

Ricochet

Enables projectiles to bounce off of walls and from target to target, granting multiple hits per shot. This skill increases accuracy and damage, especially when monsters are in narrow hallways or tight clusters.

"Sometimes, luck is better than skill. After Hunters manage to crack in a critical hit, there's a chance that the following shots will ricochet off of any hard surface and cause some additional damage." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Targeted Bounce Sounds like an upgraded verison of Ricochet. "When the Hunter scores a critical hit, there's a chance that following shots that hit an enemy will re-target additional enemies." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Dual Shot

This was reported as a Hunter skill in one preview, but as "Fire Both Weapons" is a universal skill, it's likely the reporter just made an error.

Guided Shot

Like the Amazon's Guided Arrow from Diablo II, this skill lets the Hunter fire tracking bullets at an individual target. Kill a boss behind his minions, or hit a fast-moving target.

Improve Accuracy

Increases your accuracy. This has been seen in the active skill selection menu, so it's assumed to be something you use as an active gun skill, rather than a passive sort of bonus.

Multi-shot

Fires a spread of shots, similar to the Amazon skill of the same name in Diablo II. How this will work with beam weapons or weapons that already fire multiple shots (such as the Tempest Rifle) is unknown.

Rapid Fire

Said to improve your firing rate temporarily. Unclear if it's a skill that works every time you shoot, or if it gives you a bonus to firing rate for some short period once you use it. How it interacts with other Marksmanship skills is also unknown. Can a Hunter Rapid Fire Multishot, for instance?

"Because Hunters are all about the use of ranged weaponry, it's no surprise that it's good to be able to fire them faster for a bit. This ability taps into their heightened reflexes to fire their weapon at a greater speed. Once used, whatever weapon is being used will fire very fast even if a little more inaccurately. Combined with a spread weapon with high damage, it can make a mess of a large group of enemies. This ability can not be used while crouching." --IGN Preview, December 2006

Reduce Cooldown

Reduces the heating of weapons while being used. It's not known quite how weapon heat-up and cooldown will work in Hellgate: London, but some Hunter weapons are said to slow down or lock up if fired for too long, or possibly when fired with modifying Marksmanship skills? Crouching can also increase firing rate, and might combine with this skill.

Reduce Recoil

Reduced the weapon recoil. Another skill we don't know much about. Recoil is presumed to affect Hunter targeting, causing the crosshairs to bounce up when you fire a large weapon, most likely. The physics for this was not implemented during our past playtesting with the Cabalist and Templar, and it's unknown if all characters will now be impacted by recoil, or if it only bothers the Hunter and his FPS-style targeting.
