This article contains information that is old, or outdated, but saved for future reference, and a historical overview of Hellgate: London through the course of development of the game. These articles are NOT meant to be updated any further. You can find more articles from before launch here.

The mini-game is a game within a game in Hellgate: London, involving the type of monsters you kill, and/or the element you kill them with, in exact order. Whether it's a novelty or a major game feature remains to be seen.

Mini-game Function

Three small icons are visible on the lower left of the main game interface. These show you the order in which you must kill three conseecutive monsters, to gain a reward.
Most notably, there will be a mini-game that plays itself out as you progress through missions. As you know, action-RPGs like Hellgate revolve around the constant, relentless slaughter of horde-upon-horde of monsters. The mini-game will attempt to add a bit of reason to it (or, at the very least, another layer). It works like this: when you kill a monster, you'll initiate a combo. On your interface will appear an icon corresponding to a different monster "family" -- "spectral" for ghostlike ones, "necros" for undead, "beast" for, err, beastlike ones. Your job is to make the next monster you kill one that falls into the family whose icon is lit up on your interface. Do this enough times, and the monster at the end of the chain will yield some kind of bonus, be it a temporary stat buff, a rare item, increased experience, or what have you.

That quote speaks about an early version of the mini-game. It's evolved during development, as everything does, and there's now a lot more to it. We don't know exactly how much, but as you can see with a glance at the mini-game icons collected from three recent screenshots, there are more than just four of them. (There are four castes of monsters in Hellgate: London.) Fans have speculated that not only the monster type, but the type of damage used to kill it might factor in. Icons that look like flames and lightning bolts seem to support that argument, for what it's worth.

Winning the Mini-game

If you successfully complete the mini-game, you get a reward. What kind of reward? Good question. Flagship has said that the third monster will drop more or better items than it normally would, but they've hinted that there might be more to it than just that. More to the mini-game? Other rewards than an extra item dropped? Unknown.

Furthermore, what if the third monster in your chain is a boss? Would it drop more/better items too? Or does the mini-game only work on Lesser Demons?

Mini-game images

Mini-game icons can be seen in most in-game shots tagged with the "interface" keyword. The three used to create the image above can be seen here, here, and here.
