Jessica Sumerisle is the granddaughter of Lord Sumerisle, the commander of the Templars during the time of the demonic invasion in 2020. Jessica is rescued by Lyra Darius in the HGL comic, and seen being protected by her in the introductory cinematic. In both the comics and cinematic Jessica survives and grows into the Templar commander in the years after the initial demon invasion in the year 2020.

Jessica does turn up in the game as well, but not until late in the action.

"That cinematic was finalized long before the story was even laid out. So now we have to work Jessica in because apparently she is quite important, at least according to the cinematic.

We'redoing this by introducing her in the third transparent act. She'll be pivotal in determining where the end-game scenario will take place."

This sort of thing happens all the time in game design; the cinematics and game plot guys had a terrible time keeping in synch with Diablo II, since the cinematics too so much longer to produce that they had to be locked in well in advance, and then greatly limited the game plot changes the development team could make along the way.
