Ivan Sulic
From Hellgatewiki.com
Ivan Sulic was Flagship's first community manager, hired in February 2006. He worked as the CM for most of 2006, until moving into full time work writing much of the plot and dialogue for Hellgate: London. Ivan was a highly visible presence in the HGL community all during 2006, and made thousands of forum posts about every aspect of the game and Flagship Studios. His current Hellgate: London official forum title is "Writer / MarCom Manager".
Ivan's Job Responsibilities
Shortly after taking the job, Ivan began to describe what exactly he did at Flagship Studios.
1) My job responsibilities vary. In addition to maintaining fan relations, I'll...
- Help Tricia with any PR and marketing duties she requires of me.
- Contribute to the completion of our new official site (as required)/
- Maintain the new official site.
- Generate in-house Flagship and Hellgate related features to keep our community aware of our status. Life is very important to me, so I don't ever want our site to be dead (once the new site goes live of course).
- Document most / all of our behind-the-scenes content. This includes film and photo shoots of Flagship's events and travels.
- Attend press junkets, events and expos as necessary.
- Compile / create media and information as required.
- Whatever the hell else anyone tells me.
2) I live in San Francisco, CA. I am originally from San Jose, CA, but I have lived in the city for about four years now.
3) Mine is a salary paid position, yes. I am an employee of Flagship Studios.
The new website will eventually feature details on the story, weapons, enemies, environments, and classes of the game. It will also feature videos, screenshots, wallpapers and all that other crap. It'll basically be like every other official website for every other videogame.
Now, features I intend to generate on a daily basis may include, but are not limited to:
- Podcasts
- Fictitious head-to-heads
- Serious behind-the-scenes
- Behind-the-scenes mockumentaries
- In-game multiplayer quest videos
- Fiction
- Fan fiction
- Fan art
- Contests
- User mail / board posts
- Blogs
- IM chats
- Etcetera
I was presumably hired at Flagship because...
- I know someone here and they really like me!
- I'm a capable writer.
- I'm a capable video producer.
- I'm a content generating machine.
- I'm not shy of long work hours or arduous travel.
- I have amassed a vast collection of industry contacts.
- I come from an editorial background built around community relations.
- I worked for a publication with over 25 million readers and I helped start a publication with two readers that turned into an avid gamer's home and community resource.
- I have a somewhat identifiable persona already established in this industry.
- I'm easy to hang out with.
- I'm totally and completely insane by all scientific standards.
- I pretty much know what I'm doing and I don't ever really f*** off or beat around the bush.
2) I've worked on the media end of the games industry professionally for about six years. I spent time with IGN's various PlayStation and PC channels and I also helped Ziff-Davis launch its 1UP.com in addition to freelancing for everything from MTV to TV Guide to Computer Gaming World. Before all that I helped make a Volition / Red Faction / Freespace fansite.
Ivan further described his tasks in a November 2006 fansite chat:
- For FSS I...
- Write the story.
- Do some real minor quest design under Brevik.
- Write the dialog for the story.
- Manage our community.
- Manage our websites.
- Do PR and Marketing work under Tricia Gray.
- Do video production.
- Handle our bonus DVD.
- And I attend an amazing amount of meetings.
Ivan's Background
Ivan was interviewed by Evan Shamoon for Dave Perry and talked a lot about his background, daily tasks at Flagship Studios, and more.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I began working at IGN as an associate editor under Stephen Butts around six years ago (give or take). Quite simply, I was an extremely bored student with some writing talent. One lazy morning a friend directed me to an internship application on IGN.com and said, "You know about this gaming crap. Why not apply?" I did and was hired fulltime just a month or so later. The rest of my gaming career includes a stint at Ziff-Davis where I contributed to the 1UP launch under Sam Kennedy and another run on IGN's PlayStation channels under Jeremy Dunham. Now I'm at Flagship where I diligently do...stuff.
