Developers at E3: Flagship Studios
Will it be all work and no play at the show for the creators of the eagerly awaited action RPG, Hellgate: London? In this feature, eight members of the team at Flagships Studios, the developer of Hellgate: London, share their plans for this year's show.
Matt Householder
Director of Development
1) Setting up the Hellgate: London exhibit inside the Namco Bandai Games booth.
2) Installing our E3 build on various computers at the show.
But, I'm looking forward to buying a bacon-wrapped hot dog with grilled onions, peppers and mustard from one of the outlaw sidewalk grill carts.
Max Schaefer
COO
At E3, my official duties will be to speak with as many computer game press people as can be squeezed into three short days. Since E3 tends to immediately induce bleeding eardrums, aching backs, protesting feet and pounding headaches, retreating to the backrooms for press demos can be a welcome relief!
Of course, I will find the time to roam the floor, where I like to find the underdog, under-appreciated, under-hyped games. There are always a few gems out there that nobody has heard of or aren't getting the attention they deserve.
My other fun activity is finding the coolest booth goodies. Anyone can have a T-shirt or key chain bearing their game logo, but only the finest marketing crews can get game-themed squishy balls. Anything that can be thrown or that flies is good.
Bill Roper
CEO
I'll be showing off Hellgate: London to everyone from press to gamers to buyers to, well, just about anyone who wants to see it when I'm around!
I seldom get time away from the booth, so when I can steal a few minutes, it's a mad dash to see whatever everyone is talking about. I'm obviously looking forward to hanging out with my industry friends at the great parties in the evenings, and to staying up far too late at least one night.
David Brevik
CVO
This year will be similar to last E3 for me. I will be showing off our game, Hellgate: London, to press in private interviews. I'm sure I will be quite busy and not have much time to spend looking at all of the games.
I used to spend many hours playing and evaluating the games at E3, but the trend of late to have many of the popular or interesting games behind closed doors, combined with my new duties, allows very little time for show viewing any more. That being said, I am looking forward to seeing the World of Warcraft expansion, Zelda and any PS3 stuff the most.
Aside from my official duties, I am very excited about spending time with my wife and kid since they will be there with me and will have seen very little of them recently.
Phil Shenk
Art Director
Officially, I'll be demoing the game, watching people play it, and looking for what they like and don't like. I usually end up doing a couple interviews, and helping out around the booth. I'm especially excited about the premiere of our new cinematic.
Unofficially, I'll be checking out the field, seeing if there's anything groundbreaking going on. I can't think of anything specific that I'm looking forward to, except maybe Spore if it's on the floor, or the Revolution. Maybe go to a few parties, and try not to get too burnt out!
Erich Schaefer
CCO
What I'll be doing at E3... Officially, I'll be demoing Hellgate and singing its praises to anyone willing to listen. I also usually end up doing some problem solving and morale boosting.
Unofficially, I'll be trolling for the cool and weird hidden gems; no big over-hyped mini-theater demos for me. If the public can't play it, it doesn't count.
Dave Glenn
Art Director
Duties: Demoing the game to press and working the booth.
Otherwise, catching up with industry friends, scoping new games, and relaxing after the pre-E3 crunch. Dos cervesas por favor!
Tricia Gray
Marketing and Communications Director
I will be running around like a mad woman, making sure the press checks out Hellgate and the booth doesn't burn down, since we have multiplayer up this year.
I am looking forward to seeing Spore if it's on the floor.
