Hunters are the gunners and techsmiths of Hellgate: London. Armed with mechanical knowhow and the best rifles in the game, Hunters use technology to defeat the demons, and prefer to pick off their enemies from a distance, though they can go melee in special situations. The hunter classes are Engineers and Marksmen.

Hunter Description

Hunter posing with a kill.
Hunters are highly-trained ex-military operatives and members of secret government agencies who are most comfortable clinging to the shadows and dealing with threats in their own deadly ways. But after the Demon invasion, these rogues switch their crosshairs from one another to the monsters that are threatening their world, utilizing hyper-advanced weaponry that mixes new technologies and theoretical science to stay a few steps ahead of the Cabalists and the Templar.

The archetype of the Hunter is obscure, cloaked in mystery and subterfuge. In one way he is the Assassin, the Ninja, the knife in the dark. In other ways, he is the Ronin, a highly-trained warrior with no master. And yet more, he is the Destroyer, a force of blazing gunfire and deadly accuracy that lays waste to any foe that stands in his way.

Bill Roper talked more about the design theories behind the faction.

"From the beginning we wanted a faction that represented the bleeding-edge of our near-future world's technology. We also wanted to push the first-person perspective element of the engine, and the Hunter's emphasis on FPS game play mechanics does just that. Although the core role-playing mechanics of the game do not change for The Hunter, he does not utilize the auto-locking and soft-targeting that Templar and Cabalists have.

Instead, there is an emphasis placed on player skills, from their ability to aim to tactics and strategies common to FPS games. The great response from first-person shooter players that have tried out the Hunter is very encouraging and makes us confident that we'll be bringing some new players into the realm of role-playing games."
--Bill Roper, November 2006, WetaNZ interview.

Bill Roper elaborates (November 20, 2006)

Bill Roper: "The Hunter faction is designed to appeal to the first-person shooter-style player--someone that wants to be fully immersed in the world and battle demons with high-tech weaponry and gadgets. While the Templars focus mainly on melee combat and holy rituals and the Cabalists use the powers of the demons against them through magical rites, the Hunters use bleeding-edge tech to fight for mankind's freedom. The Hunter faction appeals to FPS players in several ways. First and foremost, since they primarily use all ranged weapons, they are best played in first-person mode. Secondly, player skill is a factor as we eliminate the autolock and soft-targeting features that the Templar and Cabalist use. Hellgate: London is a role-playing game, however, so level, skills, and equipment do matter. The player who chooses a Hunter, however, will gain benefits from having a degree of personal FPS skills. ...It is important to point out that while the Hunter does have many FPS gameplay components, Hellgate is still an RPG. The fundamental aspects of the game do not change in so much as you are still gaining experience, going up in levels, learning new skills, finding new weapons and armor and equipment, completing quests, and so forth. The mechanics of this, however, are very much driven from an FPS perspective when you play a Hunter. While I don't know if it "transforms" the game into a shooter, we've had incredibly positive feedback from hardcore FPS players who have tried out the Hunter."

Hunter Classes

The two classes of the Hunter faction are Engineers and Marksmen. The Engineers uses their knowledge in technology and weaponry to create powerful Drones and robots to aid them in vanquishing demons. They don't have a "soft aim" like Templars and Cabalists, so they also got to know how to aim and shoot. Marksmen rely mainly on their weapons, and skills of how to use them, taking down enemies from afar. They specialise in shooting techniques, sniper shots and grenades.

Hunter Skills

All the skills of the Hunters are naturally centred around anything to do with guns, grenades, tactical strikes and robots. Almost all skills are part of one of the eight Hunter Skill Groups: Boost (Marksman only), Tactical (Marksman & Engineer), Combat (Marksman & Engineer), Grenade (Marksman & Engineer), Precision Strike (Marksman & Engineer), Bots (Engineer only). There is also skills that are ungrouped. Even the Hunter Skills that has the same name between the classes usually have some minor differences.

Hunter Aim

The main difference between the Hunter faction, and the other factions is the lack of a "soft aim", they actually have to point at what they want to kill. The Cabalist and Templar factions are less picky.

The play style might appeal more to FPS players, but you don't need to be a twitch gamer with pixel accuracy to play a Hunter. Your stats and attributes and equipment will still be very important and is used to improve your aim (assuming you can at least hit the broad side of an Exospecter), but you must have some control over your crosshairs to have success as a Hunter. Doubt your aim? Worry not. Hellgate: London isn't Counter Strike. There aren't any infinite range sniper rifles with zoom scopes. Guns fire magical projectiles from relatively close range, many weapons fire sprays of projectiles that cover a large area, Marksman Skills like multishot and rapid fire and ricochet help with imprecise aim, and so forth. For the sniper fans, there is also the slow, but devastating, sniper rifles that in most cases take out enemies with one or two shots.

This article is flagged as a stub because it just needs some more pictures and explanations from the Flagship designs of the Hunter.

Hunters are hi-tech, functional, and streamlined. Black bodysuits covered by various types of armor, goggles with special vision lenses (which doesn't really have any actual function), and big guns.
