Designed as a companion sidearm for the Templar, the Grappler does just what its name implies. Firing out a tether of braided Palladium, the device securely latches onto its target and draws it quickly into melee range. This is a particularly useful item against demons that attack from the skies as it can instantly negate their greatest tactical advantage.
Name: Grappler
Type: Pistol weapon
Damage Type: Physical, Spectral
Max Mod Slots: 2
Critical Hit Bonus: N/A

The Grappler is a fun weapon, but one that must be used intelligently. It doesn't deal much damage on its own, so must be paired with a one-handed melee weapon of some sort, making it a tool primarily of use to the Templar. It's not something even a Templar wants to use all the time, since most monsters in Hellgate: London are only too eager to move themselves into melee range. Only against flying monsters, or creatures attempting to evade you, is the Grappler truly necessary. It can be fun just to haul ground-based creatures around, even if it's not strictly necessary. Blademasters may find the grappler usefull as a means to spread out a mob a bit more, enabeling them to quickly hack through the opposition one at a time.

Currently, grapplers have been spotted with up to two Relic mods, and with differentiating damage types, both Physical and Spectral. Spectral damage is nice, as it would be possible to pull a monster in and with a little luck phase it at the same time, offering clear room for a single, decisive strike. This allows one to deal with the monster quickly, once you pull it into range. The grappler might also work as some sort of a stun gun, since it can do Physical damage. However, one should not depend too much on this effect; monsters generally don't come in helpless, with their heads on the chopping block. Keep your sword ready, since the grappler can be more like pulling a tiger in by the tail than a fish on a hook. Bad timing can and will lead to disastrous results.

The grappler was one of the first weapons we learned about, in early Hellgate: London previews:

The Grappler is a secondary ranged weapon that does little damage by itself, but is mainly used to draw enemies close to your person, so that you can hack away at them with your melee weapon. "Fishing for monsters," as Roper put it, kind of like Scorpion in Mortal Kombat.

It's also not known how the physics work on a Grappler. Is there any limit to how large something can be? If you hook a Fetid Hulk, or a massive boss monster, does the grappler pull them to you? Not work at all? Or pull you to them?

Darkling Snipers and Scouts are said to use Grapplers also, and while this has never been witnessed, it's interesting to imagine monsters dragging you into their range, rather than vice versa. Given that neither snipers nor scouts use melee weapons, it's not clear why they'd want to pull you in. Perhaps to bring you into range for their Trooper associates?

Before the grappler was added to the official site with new images, there was some confusion over its graphics. Most fans assumed the Blaze Pistol, with its grappling hook-looking tip, was the grappler. There weren't any shots of the grappler pistol itself, but it's unlikely we would have recognized it anyway, with just a slot in the front, rather than the hook we were expecting.
