Hellgate: London is full of popular culture references and trivia which can be found throughout the game. Some of these are from movies of the same genre as the game (that is: Zombie movies and the like), some are from Diablo I & II, and yet others are just homages to others that the Hellgate crew saw fit.

General Easter Eggs

  • The TARDIS makes an appearance?
    The TARDIS makes an appearance?
A police box sometimes makes an appearance in a destroyed building in maps based on the surface streets of London. The words "Strange Box" appear above the door. The indoor positioning of this police box seems to be a reference to the TARDIS in the television series Doctor Who.
  • Vendors: One of the written phrases that shows up in vendor dialog is "Are you being served?". This is probably a reference to the Britcom (British sitcom) by the same name.

Act I Easter Eggs and Trivia

Holborn Area

  • Joey in Holborn Station has lost his leg, and when you help him to get back his prosthetic, you get "Wart's Leg". This item is an homage to Wirt the peg-legged boy from Diablo 1 who would charge you 50 gold to even see the single item that he had. His items had the potential to be better than anything you could find in the dungeon, but often were junk. The item itself is a reference to the one that could be found in Diablo II, Warcraft III: TFT and World of Warcraft.
  • The Sumatran Rat Monkey is a reference to Peter Jackson's (of LOTR fame) Brain Dead (also titled Dead Alive in the U.S. release.) Found in the Holborn Access Shafts, the Sumatran Rat Monkey is "a hybrid that (according to legend) resulted from the rape of tree monkeys by plague rats." The creature is depicted in the first scene of the movie when is is captured and brought to the local zoo and is ultimately responsible for infesting a Wellington New Zealand with hundreds of zombies. More can be read about the Sumatran Rat Monkey and Peter Jackson's "Brain Dead" at [1].

Covent Garden Area

  • Julianne Drew Medic who "raised seven mischievous children with the use of an uplifting song" is clearly a reference to the English actress Julie Andrews.
  • Mac Kenzie Quest-Giver: this is obviously a reference to The Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew from 1983. One of the quests from Mac Kenzie is called Strange Brew, and most of his quests revolve around brewing the perfect beer Elsinore - a reference to the brewery in the movie. Mac Kenzie also speaks the phrase "shiny happy people," a reference to music group REM's song by the same name.
  • Sleestak: Named beast in Upper Kings Highway. Possibly a reference to the Sleestak creatures from the 1970s kid's show Land of the Lost.

Act II Easter Eggs and Trivia

  • Joanne made her fortune with a book about a shy boy who had great adventures out in the world, a reference to J.K. (Joanne) Rowling and the Harry Potter series. One of her quests is to find a pet named Dobster, possibly a reference to the house elf Dobby.

Act III Easter Eggs and Trivia

Temple Station

  • Tiberius wants to be a stage actor, a reference to William Shatner who started out in theater and went on to play Captain James T. (Tiberius) Kirk of Star Trek.
  • Pratch: probably a reference to author Terry Pratchett, to whom he bears a physical resemblance.
