Hellgate: London has different levels of difficulty in multiplayer. Some are available to all players, some only to subscribers, and some only to people who have completed the game.

Some modes can be combined, as long as the player and/or character in question has the proper requirements for each mode. For example, "Elite Hardcore" or "Elite Nightmare" or "Hardcore Nightmare".

Contents

Elite

Elite mode is available to all players, only at character creation after the player has completed the game with another character. Elite mode greatly increases the chance that a monster or monster group will spawn as rare or elite. (See the elite article for more details.)

Hardcore

Hardcore mode gives a character exactly one life. If the character dies, the character is lost. Hardcore is only available to subscribers and only at character creation. (See the hardcore article for more details.)

Nightmare

Nightmare mode is only available after a player finishes the game with the current character. This mode increases the difficulty of the game's areas and quests by making monsters and items roughly thirty levels higher than the first time through. Quest experience and palladium rewards are also increased.
