Remember the Dead, but Fight for the Living!

Death and penalties for dying are a key feature in all RPGs. Death has to have some price, or players will play recklessly and lose the fun of the game. Too steep a penalty can turn play into a cautious crawl since it's better to go slow than die and lose hours or days of progress. The Hellgate Team tries to find a happy middle, and they're aided in that effort by the inclusion of a "hardcore" mode in Hellgate: London. When you create a hardcore character, you're making a commitment, since when you die, you stay that way. No character resurrection for the hardcore; just memories and salty tears.

Dying

The grim reaper of Hellgate: London is a simple 3 choice question. No Chess, Checkers or Twister to play for your life though.

Not very surprising; when you lose all your hit Points, you die in Hellgate: London. Upon death, unless you play as a hardcore character, you are presented with three choices:
  • Restart in Last Visited Station (both normal and Elite modes)
  • Restart as Ghost in Current Loaded Area (normal mode only)
  • Resurrect (Cost: X Palladium) (normal mode only)
Restarting in your last visited station (the name will be printed out) will return you to safety, where you can ponder your mistakes, and return fully equipped with Health Injectors and other buffs.
Headstone
Headstone
Restarting as Ghost will make you into a white ghost, viewing the world in black & white until you get close enough to your corpse, then you autimatically will reappear alive, but with half health, and no shields. Travelling as a ghost is faster than normal run speed. Resurrecting will start you off with full shields and health on the spot instantly, but will take a toll in the form of Palladium. In team play, where your friend might also be in trouble, this can sometimes be preffered over the restarting as ghost option.

When you are back and kickin', your place of death will still be shown by your headstone, and this landmark will not change until you move to another area, log out. If you die multiple times in an area, there will be a trail of headstones until you leave the area. If there is some additional function of the headstone, it is not yet known. There is currently no way for players to resurrect one another.

Since in Elite mode you have to restart from the last station you visited, it helps to leave an open PRD Portal that you can use once resurrected once in a while.

When you die, a debuff is applied to you, which will make the kills you do for the next 5 minutes after death give you less experience. This debuff will remove 10% of the experience you should earn. This counter of 5 minutes will reset if you die again before it runs out, but will not increase to more than 5 minutes. You will not lose any items, Palladium, levels or experience by dying, the only adverse effect is the Death Penalty debuff.

Hardcore Death

If you die with your hardcore character, it stays that way. You will not be able to resurrect him with spells, effects, menus or asking Flagship crew. This means that bad playing, strange monster respawns, lag and any other thing that can kill a character can ruin your play. Make sure to do your utmost to stay safe!
