AoE is an acronym meaning Area of Effect. It is used to refer to an attack that affects multiple targets within a certain range, the range differs based on the skill or ability generating the AoE attack.

Grounded vs Streaming
In Hellgate: London there are three different varieties of AoE attacks; point blank, grounded and streaming.
Point Blank
Point blank AoE abilities use the entity casting it as an anchor point, the ability then propagates from them, damaging everything around them, most commonly in a circular shape.
Grounded
Grounded AoE abilities use a projectile, such as a grenade, as the anchor point. The damage is then inflicted to anything around this anchor.
For example; a Marksman's grenades are grounded AoE abilities, as the damage does not radiate from the Marksman itself but rather the grenade they throw.
Streaming
Streaming AoE abilities have multiple damage streams which branch off and damage random hostile targets in the vicinity.
A good example of this kind of ability is the Evoker skill Arch Legion. Bolts of lightning are emitted from the Evoker's focus device, all the bolts may target the same demon and thus inflict more damage to the single target, or they may branch off and damage multiple demons in the area.

- Prayer of Retribution - has a small damage component, but is often used with Shield Turn.
