Hellgate has over 1 Million Subscribers?

26th Jun 2008 01:25 PM GMT | Leord | 3 comments

This came in from Kotaku, as they were reading a letter from Microsoft vp John Schappert about "Growth and Opportunities in PC Gaming." On of the really interesting snippets were:

Other popular titles such as “Crysis” and “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures” have sold and shipped more than 1 million copies, respectively. “Hellgate: London” now has more than 1 million active subscribers.

Wow! It's nice to hear things are looking up!

Schappert might have "confused" 1 million active accounts with 1 million active subscribers. Since your account can be active and playable without actually paying for a sub, unlike other games.
But it still begs the question, why wasn't there a PR note floating around touting the 1 million accounts mark. Less knowledgable folk (eg. Schappert) would assume it means subscribers and would check the game out as a result. So I would have thought they'd be trumpeting the 1 million accounts.

Using Lanthanide's idea of a Founder counting as 15 people and being generous and assuming only half the million is made up of those founders... that's still 33,000 odd who ponied up for Founder status.
Seems high to me.

Would love to ask Schappert where he got that number from. I think the answer would be very intriguing.

If this were true, FSS would have made a press release on it. 1 million players is a big number.

In fact we have not even seen a press release from them indicating they have 500k, 200k or even 100k subscribers.

Probably this 1 million figure is counting 15 months of founders purchases as 15 people subscribing for 1 month, I can't think of any other way they could "legitamately" skew the numbers to get them that high.

yep I'm one of the saps shelling out the $$$, and helping to contribute to FFS bringing in nearly $9,000,000.00 per month
